Driver’s Licenses in BC

In British Columbia, new drivers must pass through a series of graduated licensing steps. Graduated driver licensing systems are designed to provide new drivers of motor vehicles with driving experience and skills gradually over time in low-risk environments. At RainCity Driving School we teach for Class 7 (L), Class 7 (N), Class 5 (L), and Class 5 (professional) licenses.

Conditions With a Class 7L License
  • You must observe the following restrictions and rules:
  • A supervisor who is 25 years of age or older with a valid Class 1-5 driver’s license must accompany you when you drive.
  • You must wait a minimum of 12 months to attempt the Road Test.
  • You may have a maximum of two passengers in your vehicle, including the supervisor.
  • You cannot drive between midnight and 5:00am.
  • You must have 0% blood alcohol content.
  • You must display the “L” sign on the rear of your vehicle.
  • Failure to comply with any of these restrictions can result in an $86 fine and 3 demerit points!

At this time it is a good idea to take lessons with a professional driving instructor to form safe and responsible driving habits.

The First Road Test (Class 7)

This 45-minute examination will test you on:

  • Driving situations and rules of the road, including starting, stopping, turning, passing vehicles, and land driving.
  • Driving through controlled and uncontrolled intersections
  • Parallel parking and backing up
  • Anticipation of hazardous conditions
  • Other safe driving practices like driving the right speed and steering techniques
  • Cornering techniques
  • Proper lane usage
  • General observation

Once you pass you First Road Test you move into the second stage of graduated licensing – your Class 7 License. This license is valid for five years. You must display a green “N” sign while driving. Check with the ICBC regarding other restrictions in this stage.

The Second Road Test (Class 5)

You can apply for your Second Road Test anytime after gaining 24 months of driving experience with your Class 7 License. This is a more advanced 60 minute test to see how your driving skills have developed. When you pass, you will receive a full-privilege Class 5 driver’s license.

If requirements, fees, and how to book:

You should book the Class 5 road test in advance. The Class 5 road test fee is $50. Please be sure to bring required ID. This is important for processing your application. Once you pass, you will also need to pay for your new license. The fee is $17 if your current license will expire in more than 6 months or $75 if your current license will expire in 6 months or less.

If you don’t pass, you may take the test again after 7 days for another $50 fee.
